      Document Description

      Existing Wording

(nothing - background) doseQuanity/@unit and administrationUnitCode/@code are a confusing set of elements, but I will do my best pulling from the base definitions:   · doseQuantity - The amount of the therapeutic agent or other substance given at one administration event. · administrationUnitCode - A code for the administered thing taken from a larger whole. Used if the consumable material is specified as a larger whole but the doseQuantity relates to a specific portion of it rather than the entire consumable material.   Practically: 1. If the item being ordered or dispensed is an individual physical object, a tablet or capsule, you put the amount to be given in doseQuantity/@value and nothing in the doseQuanity/@unit. Some systems may put a 1 or a {capsule} in the unit but it’s not required. 2. When you can use a weight, length, or volume unit you put the amount to be given in doseQuantity/@value and use an appropriate UCUM unit in the doseQuanity/@unit. 3. When you can’t use weight, length, or volume, you have to use a concept from the value set AdministrationUnitDoseForm (Value Set urn:oid: 2.16.840.1.113762.1.4.1021.30)  in administrationUnitCode/@code.

      Proposed Wording

C-CDA R2.1 should be updated to state that doseQuanity/@unit and administrationUnitCode/@code SHALL NOT both be present.
