The search parameters allow onset-age, onset-date, and onset-info *as possible ways to search onset. Thus, there is a way to search onset as a string using *onset-info.

This is not unique to Condition.onset. Instead of adding search risks in every element that has a choice of data types, we recommend using the Safety Checklist and/or recommend implementation guides profile Condition and exclude onset as as string when appropriate.

For example, the Safety Checklist, http://build.fhir.org/safety.html#7.9.1 does caution "My system caters for parameters that have missing values when doing search operations, and responds correctly to the client with regard to erroneous search parameters"

      onset-info

When performing search on onset related content, it is important to NOTE potential patient safety issues related to the fact that when string-based onset values MAY be present in a resource, a query by date only could result is missing information. Many clients assume that only date based onset values are present. This could result in missed information if physicians rely ONLY upon date based queries. I am not sure where this information should be provided.
