      it is, in fact, an instantiation of the coding pattern (system + code), and can be bound as such, and is marked as such in the coding pattern (which will become more explicit). but it's not actually a Coding type because of a whole bunch of use constraints that apply, and that would be clunkier if it was a Coding.
