The AMA would like to express concern – if the data aren’t available, will the physician need to manually check a box to indicate this (vs. just leaving empty)? Why does the receiver care if there is a reason for the data not being there – it is absent because it isn’t present in the sender’s system. This sounds burdensome for providers to have to provide a reason for a missing element.
Existing Wording:
In situations where information on a particular data element is missing and the Sender knows the precise reason for the absence of data, the Sender SHALL provide the reason for the missing information using values (such as nullFlavors) from the value set where they exist or using the dataAbsentReason extension.
