Havinig an unsolicited alert system establishes the expectation that something should be done based on the alert or notificaiton. Setting up an open loop process in healthcare pushes the requirement for closing the loop down the road-why not establish a close looped process at the start-it does not have to be complex-may only be as simple as "acknowledged" to establish that the alert/notificaiton was received and considered-it also provides a reference if the appropriate action was not taken and would at least provide a data point for process/quality improvement if there were negative consequences for failure to respond appropriately
