LOINC is recommended or required for Lab tests by:

      • HITECH ISA
      • USCDI
      • C-CDA (where US Core aligns with wherever possible)
      • LOINC recommends "Type 1" specifically

Encouraging/allowing other code systems will decrease interoperability

SNOMED CT, may be used for encoded result/values (e.g. "positive")

The current logical definition for US Core Diagnostic Report Laboratory Codes states:

      Request:

Please enhance the definition to include appropriate laboratory related codes from:

      • CPT
      • HCPCS
      • SNOMED Procedures (constrained to children of the following)
        • 15220000 | Laboratory test (procedure)

      Justification:

These code systems may either be used for ordering of laboratory test and may be the only code system available if an organization has not mapped their result values to LOINC. SNOMED may be sent as a translation code for CPT codes using the AMA CPT to SNOMED mapping file and should therefore be considered valid for use.
