      Motion: While we agree that "application/vnd.hl7.fhir+xml" is technically more correct, the history here is that we used to use "+xml" and switch to "+fhir" after early implementation experience. We don't see a practical value to switching back.

      The media types defined by FHIR are:

      application/xml+fhir

      application/json+fhir

      These naming of these media types do not follow RESTful conventions or the naming conventions of proper media types. fhir is not a proper media type suffix. Take a look at the list of IANA registered suffixes – you will see that FHIR does not fit into this: http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-type-structured-suffix/media-type-structured-suffix.xhtml

      These media types should be named something like:

      application/vnd.hl7.fhir+xml

      application/vnd.hl7.fhir+json

      The hl7.fhir subtype should be registered to the IANA under the application type and vnd tree per http://www.iana.org/assignments/media-types/media-types.xhtml
