Since this profile requires the use of LOINC codes I think we should explicitly document which Observation.value[x] data type to use based on the LOINC Type of Scale. I think it should go like this but I'm not sure if I have it exactly right.
LOINC Scale Part | FHIR Data Type |
---|---|
Qn (Quantitative) | Quantity, integer, Range, Ratio, time, dateTime, Period |
Ord (Ordinal) | CodeableConcept |
Nom (Nominal) | CodeableConcept |
Nar (Narrative) | string |
OrdQn (Quantitative or Ordinal) | CodeableConcept, Quantity, integer, Range, Ratio, time, dateTime, Period |
Multi (Multi) | |
Doc (Document) |
For a precedent please see HL7 Version 2.5.1 Implementation Guide: Laboratory Results Interface, section 8.11.1 table 8-18. It provides an explicit mapping from LOINC scale types to allowed HL7 V2 data types. We ought to do the same thing for FHIR data types.
